File 002 · Design Rationale

Perimeters fail. Locked files stay locked.

Unlike Vault is a data security platform: Windows and Android apps that encrypt the files and notes you choose on your own device, under a key only you can unlock. Most data is guarded only by what surrounds it — a lock screen, an account password, a server’s walls — so one breach opens all of it. We put the lock on the data itself.

§ 01 · Two Weak Setups

Both guard the room, not the file.

Ask how your files are protected today, and the answer is usually one of two setups. Look at where each one stops:

Setup A · “Password-protected”

Guarded at the door.

Your files sit in plain form on your laptop, your phone, your backups and whatever cloud they’re copied to. Each copy is only as safe as what stands in front of it: a lock screen, an account password, a provider’s servers. That holds until one of them fails — a stolen phone, a phished login, a leaked backup — and then every file behind it is readable.

Setup B · “Encrypted storage”

Locked inside their walls.

The encryption is real, but it only covers what sits on their shelves. Move everything into their storage, rebuild your folders and pay again for space you already had. The protection belongs to their storage, not to your files, so the day you want to leave, you’re packing boxes again.

Lock the file itself, on your device, under your key. Then where it’s stored stops deciding who can read it.

Keep your lock screen and your strong passwords; they still matter. They just shouldn’t be the only thing standing between a breach and your tax return. And because the lock travels with the file, there’s no new storage to buy. We charge for the security layer, not for where your files live.

§ 02 · Design Rules

The rules the lock is built around.

Each one is a constraint on the product, written down so you can hold us to it. A broken rule is a security bug, and we treat it like one.

01

The data carries its own lock.

Your files and notes are encrypted before they’re stored anywhere, so their protection never rests on a lock screen, an account login or a server’s walls alone.

02

Key custody stays with you.

The key that opens your account is kept by us only in a locked form we can’t open. What unlocks it — your passphrase, your device’s secure unlock, or a passkey on the web — stays with you.

03

Your storage stays yours.

Files and notes stay on your device, or in your own personal Google Drive, OneDrive or Dropbox. We don’t host them, and one price covers the security layer; storage stays between you and your provider — billed by them, sized by you.

04

The key does the work, not a secret format.

Your encrypted files sit in storage you control, in a documented format. Their safety rests on your key, not on a hidden file layout, and we can’t hold on to files we never had.

05

What we don’t collect can’t leak from us.

No ads, no analytics, no trackers — this website included. Your files, their names and your notes never reach our servers, so they aren’t there to be stolen.

§ 03 · The Lock

Designed for the day something goes wrong.

Think about how files usually get out: a laptop left in a taxi, a cloud password reused on a site that was breached, an old backup drive, a link forwarded once too often. Each time, a wall fails, and whatever sat behind it in plain form can be read. So Unlike Vault puts the lock on the file instead. The Windows and Android apps encrypt a file you choose right where it is, and Encrypted Notes live in the same vault. With a cloud connected, the encrypted copy goes into one Unlike Vault folder in your own storage, and nothing else in your account is read or touched. Whoever walks off with a locked copy gets ciphertext, not the contents. How that works, key by key, is on the blueprint.

What the lock asks of you: a locked file is only as recoverable as your passphrase and the unlock methods you set up. There’s no passphrase reset, because a reset is the first thing an attacker would ask for, pretending to be you. If you keep a vault in your own cloud, that provider can still see that encrypted files exist: how many, roughly how big, and when they change. And on your own disk, a locked file keeps its readable name. Limits you can’t see are limits you can’t plan for, so every one is on the blueprint.

§ 04 · The Name

A vault that doesn’t trust its own walls.

Most vaults are judged by their walls: how thick the door is, how hard the combination is to guess. Get past those, and everything inside is open. Unlike Vault works the other way round. Each file gets its own random key, locked under yours, so the file carries its protection with it, on your device, in your own cloud, or anywhere a copy ends up. That’s the “unlike”. It’s also a family name: Unlike Mail is Adamanture’s product for email.

§ 05 · The Company

Who answers for the design.

Unlike Vault comes from Adamanture Private Limited, which treats security as engineering: a written design, a documented file format, and limits stated before anyone has to ask.

Status: in development

Unlike Vault isn’t released yet. The Windows and Android apps are in development, and there’s nothing to download or buy today. The design is already on paper: how the keys are layered, how a .uvault file is put together, what our server keeps and where the protection stops. It’s all on the blueprint, so you can review it before you ever rely on it. Design flaws are easiest to fix before launch, so reports are welcome now.
